I Answered The Call......

Today, I spent 9 hours down at the Superior Courthouse doing my civic duty. I received my request to appear as a juror about four weeks ago. It is my third call up in 33 years, so I guess that isn't too bad. But I do know people that have been here at least that long and have never been asked to serve. Phil has been requested twice but each time when he called the courthouse the day before, his group was canceled. I'm not comfortable driving downtown so I drove down to Phil's work and he dropped me off in front of the courthouse. That eliminated half of the anxiety I was feeling. My fear was that I would get "stuck" on a month long case. Anyway, about 10am, 50 of us were sent up to a courtroom as prospective jurors for a 4 day criminal trial. It's a very long process interviewing all of us. First by the judge and then again by the defense attorney and then by the county attorney. The judge today said that an excuse that he heard from a gal in our group was one that he never heard before. The woman said that she had started "menopause" so she couldn't possibly serve as a juror. That's one for the books!! When we got back from our last recess, 11 jurors were chosen out of the remaining approx 30 of us. Luckily, I was not one of them. Since I was called, I am now not eligible for appearing again for at least 18 months!!!! Hooray!
